Transkript Complex prepositions: “because of, in spite of, instead of” (Übungsvideo)

Hello! I'm Camilla and I come from England. Welcome to the practice video for complex prepositions. Before we start, you should take note that this whole video is in English, so it is probably a good idea to have a dictionary to hand. So before we start with practice exercises, can you remember what the complex prepositions are? Exactly. "Because of", "in spite of" and "instead of". But do you know what they mean in German? Very good. "Because of" can be translated as "augrund/wegen", "in spite of" is "trotz" and "instead of" ist like "statt" or "anstatt" and it is important to remember that they can appear at the beginning or the middle of a sentence, but never at the end of a sentence. So, here it goes with the exercises. Listen to these 4 sentences and see if you can then fill in the gaps with the correct complex preposition. Number 1: ... his big muscles, Tom was unable to remove the lid of the jam jar. Number 2: The game was cancelled ... heavy rain and thunderstorms. Number 3: Bianca dropped her coat in the river and ... fishing it out, she said she would buy a new one. Number 4: Laura kept going out at the weekend ... her imminent exams. So now press the pause button and see if you can fill in the gaps. Ready? Let us see if you are right.   Number 1: In spite of his big muscles, Tom was unable to remove the lid of the jam jar. Number 2: The game was cancelled because of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Number 3: Bianca dropped her coat in the river and instead of fishing it out, she said she would buy a new one. Number 4: Laura kept going out at the weekend in spite of her imminent exams.   Right, now it is time for something a little bit different. Here in front of you, you have enough words to build 3 sentences. Each sentence has one complex preposition. So have a look these words and see if you can work out what the 3 sentences are. Okay, let us have a look. The first sentence is: In spite of our argument we're still friends. The second sentence is: She wants her bridesmaids to dress in purple instead of orange. And the third sentence is: Because of you I'm late to class. Did you manage to get them? As you know, the complex prepositions can appear at the beginning or at the middle of the sentence, which means your sentences may have looked like this, instead: We're still friends in spite of our argument. Instead of orange she wants her bridesmaids to dress in purple. I'm late to class because of you. Great! So now it is time for our last exercise and this is a test of right or wrong. Listen to these sentences and identify first of all whether they are right or wrong and if they are wrong, try to think of how you would say the sentence correctly. She went to the cinema with her friends instead of her stomach ache. In spite of his cold, Bob bought an extra large box of tissues. Katy sent Simon a birthday text message instead of a traditional card. Steven got hiccups instead of his laughing fit. So do you know which ones are right or wrong? Exactly! The first, second, and fourth sentence are wrong and the third one is right. Now, which complex preposition should go in the wrong sentences? Do you know? Exactly. The sentences should sound like this: She went to the cinema with her friends in spite of her stomach ache. Because of his cold, Bob bought an extra large box of tissues. Steven got hiccups because of his laughing fit. Well done! You made it to the end of the practice video! I hope it has been helpful. In spite of the fun we are having, I am afraid it is time to go. But hopefully we will see each other soon. So take care. Bye-bye!

  • Untersuche den Text auf Präpositionen.

    Tipps

    • in
    • under
    • at
    • on
Präpositionen können aber auch komplex sein, das heißt aus zwei oder mehr Wörtern bestehen. Neben den dir nun geläufigen because of, instead of, in spite of gibt es dabei beispielsweise auch noch:
    • in front of - vor
    • next to - neben
