The geography of Ireland – die Geografie Irlands

The entire Irish island is about 84,000 km² in size and is completely surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. It is divided into four regions or provinces: There’s Connacht in the northwest, Ulster in the north, Leinster in the east and Munster in the south. The provinces of the Republic of Ireland are also divided into 26 counties. Ulster is today divided: Only three of the nine counties belong to the Republic of Ireland. The remaining six counties are Northern Ireland and belong to the United Kingdom.

The capital, Dublin, is in the Leinster region. Other larger cities are Cork, Limerick and Galway. Flat plains, lakes, moors and cliff coasts are characteristic of Ireland's landscape. The humid climate, which is particularly good for the country's vegetation, has earned Ireland the nickname “Emerald isle”.

Ireland’s current politics and economy – Irlands aktuelle Politik und Wirtschaft

The island of Ireland is one of the British Isles and is today politically divided into the independent Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom (UK). Northern Ireland was in a state of civil war from 1968 until the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. To this day, there are political tensions, but peace prevails most of the time. The Republic of Ireland is a parliamentary democracy headed by the Irish Prime Minister, who is called “Taoiseach” in the national language. The country has been a member of the European Union (EU) since 1973.

For a long time, Ireland was a poor country with a weak economy. Most people worked in agriculture. This changed at the end of the last century: Joining the European Union (EU) gave the formerly poor country an economic boost. It also made the country more interesting for investments by American companies. Its fast economic growth in the 1990s gave Ireland the new nickname Celtic Tiger. Despite the financial crisis in 2008 and 2009, which greatly weakened Ireland's economy, growth has remained above average.

Agriculture now makes up only a small part of the Irish economy. Much more important is the industrial production of export goods as well as services. Many well-known American companies, such as Google and Facebook, have their headquarters in Ireland for tax reasons. In addition, there is the extraction of important mineral resources, such as zinc, lead, silver, gold and natural gas, just to name a few.
